We are a mix of parents and teachers who have lived and worked in Paphos. For some of us it has been a great adventure, for others not so. We have two things in common: one, our children and two, in creating this website all the contributions are from parents or teachers who have no financial or business interests in the subjects raised within this site. We are simply passing on our views and experiences to help those considering a new life in Cyprus.

You may disagree with some of our opinions or feel we are being harsh, perhaps your experiences differs from ours. This website does not offer advice; we are just passing on our knowledge. You must clarify for yourself the facts. With regard to education contact the Cyprus Ministry of Education who should be able to provide the information you require.

Of course, we understand when considering such a bold move the last thing you want is to read is what would appear to be downbeat opinions. The contents of this website is not downbeat, just frank. Cyprus, as with many Mediterranean Countries has over the past years enjoyed economic growth. However, the world is changing. The questions you need to ask yourself:- If you decide to purchase a property are you getting value for money ? Will your family settle ? Will you find long term and stable employment ? Can you afford to live in Paphos ?. But most important of all, your children and their education, therefore their future. Is a move to Paphos educationally the right choice ?

There is no doubt, a move to Cyprus can be a wonderful experience. Providing you have fully researched and prepared you and your family for a new adventure and have sufficient funds to cover at least your first year living and educational expenses then there can be few places better to relocate than Cyprus.

For anyone relocating from the UK there is a familiar and settling feel in Cyprus, driving is on the left (mostly !). Almost everyone is able to speak at least some English and in general the Laws of Cyprus are based on UK Law.

Cyprus as with any Country has its own unique customs and traditions and the culture can at times be very challenging. The British seem to have a brazen view that everyone should speak English (wherever they are in the world) and it is their legal right to be able to buy an English daily newspaper and watch British TV. There is a general reluctance to learn Greek and the Cypriots mostly tolerate this lack of respect. If you met a Cypriot in the UK would you be expected to speak Greek ?

Turkey occupies northern Cyprus, (The landing of Turkish troops in the northern part of Cyprus on July 20, 1974) resentment and bitterness is very evident, Greek Cypriots refer to Northern Cyprus as “the occupied territories”, a conflict unlikely ever to be resolved. There are occasional threats Turkey will attempt another invasion, while this is extremely unlikely due to International pressure to prevent this happening it can still be unsettling.

Throughout this website we strongly recommend you always ensure the individual or persons teaching, coaching or supervising your children are trained and qualified to do so. Whether they are educational teachers, a football or tennis coach or in any other position of responsibility. They should also hold a Disclosure & Barring Service certificate (DBS) to the date of their departure from the UK (if British) and a clear Cypriot police report from the day they arrived in Cyprus. Would you place your children in a UK club if the individual supervising them is not trained, qualified and insured ?

MAKE SURE THEY HOLD PROFESSIONAL INSURANCE, A CURRENT SAFE GUARDING CHILDREN CERTIFICATE AND ARE FIRST AID TRAINED. CHECK THEY ARE REGISTERED WITH THE APPROPRIATE SPORTING OR GOVERNING BODY.

Just because a person may seem friendly does not make them a suitable person to teach your children. If they do not hold the appropriate qualification(s) and insurance then this could be a warning they have no commitment to the service(s) they are offering.

Sensible is safe.

You will occasionally hear “but this is Cyprus” which can be used in justification of an illegal act or dishonestly. It is practically regarded as a legal term to justify someone’s dishonest actions or poor service. Wrong is wrong, no matter where you live.

Sometimes, a family who have worked extremely hard and for many years to pay a mortgage to own their own property will sell their UK home, move overseas and then take a casual view towards their long term accrued investment and use the sale proceeds to fund their new lives. For some this works well, for others there is no turning back and their lifelong resources diminish leaving them no way of owning their own home again.

One important factor you must take into consideration. Cyprus is an Island, with a few exceptions the only way to travel is by air. It may sound glamorous living the jet set lifestyle but can be time consuming and with Air Passenger Duty (APD) air travel has become expensive, don’t dismiss this lightly. There can be disruptions to air travel, disputes, strikes even ash clouds can all delay or even cancel a planned trip. Friends and family will no longer be able to drop by and unless you import goods you are restricted to the products and services offered on the Island.

We have explained in our Home Page throughout this website you will find extracts taken from the press, forums, other media and government agencies such as the police and customs. It is important to stress these articles are taken directly from their open source and Paphoseducation.com has not created or invented them. They are there to give you a feel for the subjects in which they relate.

We hope the information within this website has been useful. Remember, a holiday is very different to relocating, the key is to research fully and don’t let the glamor of moving overseas cloud your judgement.
